IP-led growth

Growing a firm by building it around a single piece of owned intellectual property — a research program, a proprietary dataset, a signature framework — that becomes the engine every other motion runs on. Rather than producing disposable content endlessly, you ship one dense, citable authority asset and let it generate the rest. For WPH, the annual benchmark is the IP: from that one effort come the interview questions, the CEO Awards keynote, a year of LinkedIn posts, and the private scorecard that becomes the paid diagnostic. It also travels as a moat — outsiders can’t replicate the PH data, and the first firm to publish owns the franchise.

Source: A course term drawing on two influences: David C. Baker’s argument that one periodic authority asset (“a book that’s really well received every three years”) unlocks every downstream discovery channel, and Hinge Research Institute’s research-as-content model where a proprietary research program becomes the firm’s growth engine. The course applies both to WPH’s annual benchmark.
