Visible expert
A professional whose expertise buyers have already encountered — through published work, talks, or research — before any sales conversation begins. The key finding is counter-intuitive: what buyers pay extra for is not additional technical skill but the visibility itself, because having watched the expert think, hiring them feels less risky. A visible expert also pulls their whole firm’s brand upward. For WPH, this is the mechanism that justifies the 5x price jump: the buyer must meet Richard’s expertise before the pricing conversation, not during it.
Source: Hinge Research Institute, The Visible Expert study and book — a study of 220 visible experts and 275 buyers who hired them. Hinge argued that marketplace visibility, not extra expertise, is what commands premium fees (a documented 2x–13x range) and lowers buyer-perceived risk.
